Taking a cold shower outside – Fiona’s goosebump moment

(text video)

Fiona: “Hello, I am from Germany and my goosebump moment is taking a cold shower outside, surrounded by nature. Yeah, I am from Germany, I am used to taking hot showers every day. And then we moved to Colombia, to a little Finca here in Santa Marta and there is no hot water. When we had just moved here, there wasn’t even water in the house. So, we started taking our showers outside in the garden and one night there was a huge rainstorm. A tropical storm. We still had to shower, so we went there, took the shower and it was just an amazing feeling being connected with nature and I will never forget that. For you to have an idea what it’s like…”

Enjoying nature

For nature lovers, there is nothing like spending time outdoors, breathing fresh air, or sleeping under the stars. Being in contact with nature is an incredible sensation, although it can be uncomfortable sometimes, like when we want to wash ourselves and we only have cold water.

We are so used to hot water that we never think about taking a cold shower. We just imagine the scene and we get cold. However, many cultures have discovered and appreciate the many benefits of bathing in the sea, even in winter. We are talking about very low temperatures.

Therefore, taking a cold shower is often recommended as a therapy for a better quality of life, based on cultural traditions.

The benefits of showering with cold water

Showering with cold water is beneficial. It has been proven to promote health in many ways. It’s a good idea to start practicing this so you can do it right in nature.

The body’s contact with cold water initiates a process of thermogenesis, whereby it burns stored fat for heat. It does this by increasing circulation, which also brings more oxygen to the muscles, giving them more strength.

This also has a stimulating effect on the nervous system, which promotes alertness and mental clarity. Therefore, a very popular tip is to wash your face with cold water in the morning to wake up and start the day with a full capacity of concentration.

A cold shower in the morning is a recognized way to promote weight loss. This is because it increases fat loss, increasing the metabolic rate, or the speed at which the body consumes lipids.

In addition, prolonged exposure of the body to cold can lead to the proliferation of viruses that cause colds and flu. However, it has been proven that a cold shower for a few minutes increases the body’s defenses.

In fact, it boosts the production of white blood cells that make your body stronger in the presence of these viruses. It also improves our mood and combats depression and anxiety.

This type of bath also has natural aesthetic benefits. Cold water is often recommended for hair and skin, as the increased circulation it provides benefits your appearance.

Take care of the environment

According to the WHO, a 10 to 15 minute bath can use up to 300 liters of water. Bathing with lukewarm water often lengthens the process, since we let a good stream of water run until it reaches the ideal temperature. This can be avoided by using cold water baths from the start: you will save electricity, water, and time.

It is always a good idea to take a quick cold shower after exercising or after getting out of the sauna chamber. Some claim that it reduces muscle soreness, although there is no scientific evidence to this effect.

Of course, this practice is not for everyone. You should keep in mind that children, people with heart conditions or those of advanced age could have health complications. Also, if you are suffering from a respiratory infection, avoid sudden changes in temperature or, in any case, consult your doctor.

Switching the shower faucet to cold water will make you healthier, improve your mood and make you look fresher in a couple of weeks.
