“Hello, my name is Laura and I come from The Bahamas. My goosebump moment was when I listened to the song “Payphone” by Maroon 5. It was because it transported me to my childhood home. It is because when I was a child, I usually played a lot of video games, and a lot of online video games, so my favorite was Habbo. Habbo had a person who could play different genres of music on the radio, and this person was always playing the same song “Payphone”. Habbo was my favorite game during my childhood because it helped me to make some friends and it gives me the creativity I have right now. And finally, because I met a lot of people around the world.”

The success of “Payphone”

Maroon 5 is one of the most recognized groups in the music industry thanks to their entire trajectory and their list of hits. One of those hits was “Payphone”, the song they sang with Wiz Khalifa, which talks about missing old times with a love.

This song, which is composed of pop and R&B genres with hip hop influences, snuck into the top spot for a week when it took the crown from Loreen’s “Euphoria”. Coupled with catchy lyrics about a relationship that has broken up, the song garnered a multitude of nominations, including winning Best Breakup Song at the Teen Choice Awards.

Where does Maroon 5 come from?

Most of the band’s members spent their lives in the same high school in West Los Angeles where they first approached music with Kara’s Flowers, an early experiment born in 1995 that featured Levine, Carmichael, Madden and Dusick who were barely 17 years old. Despite their youth, producer Rob Cavallo bet on the Californians’ power pop and that same year their first album “The fourth world” was released.

However, the public did not respond positively to their debut. Their record company, Rhino, decided to release the group so that they could find a new label to work with. With deep disappointment, Levine and Carmichael decided to enroll at UCLA in New York State. What might have seemed like a first breakup was simply a plan B.

Weeks later the four friends reunited in Los Angeles after realizing that their songs improved tremendously when their explosive rock and roll was mixed with a touch of rhythm and blues. With a new sound came many changes.

First the quartet added a fifth member, guitarist James Valentine. “James came into the group just as we were looking for a new band name,” recalls Adam Levine. It was clear that they had changed, and their Kara’s Flowers project was behind them. Maroon 5 was born in 1999.
