“Hi! My name is Tobias Borg I come from Malta, and this time, I would like to share with you my favorite goosebump moment. If you watch the “Justice League” movie, just in the part that Flash tries to save the girl, a very beautiful song comes up, from the group “The Mortal Coils”, the “Song to the Siren”. That song is very inspiring for me because of the musical arrangement, the beautiful poetry in the lyrics, and the beautiful voice of the girl, the singer of that group. It really moves my floor so I would like you to hear the song and to hear the delightful melody of the song and it really reminds me of moments from my childhood when maybe for the first time you fall in love”.
A 1970 version of the song
“Song to the Siren” is a song by Rose Betts that appears on Zack Snyder’s “Justice League” soundtrack, released in conjunction with the film on March 18, 2021 by WaterTower Music. It is a cover of the 1970 song of the same name by artist Tim Buckley, which was written by Buckley and Larry Beckett.
Dody Dorn knew Rose Betts and approached her in July 2020 to send her a demo of a version of Tim Buckley’s song “Song to the Siren” for use in Zack Snyder’s “Justice League”, in the scene where Barry Allen saves Iris West from a car accident.
At the time, Betts now knew which film she was submitting a demo for or which scene the song would be used in. However, Dorn gave her three lines that vaguely described a scene in which two people fall in love at first sight, then one of them gets into a car accident and the other person rushes in to save them in slow motion.
Betts came up with his arrangement with strong inspiration from other versions of “Song to the Siren,” most notably the 1984 version of This Mortal Coil.
Song chosen for the “Justice League” soundtrack
In December 2020, the film’s production team contacted Betts and told her she got the job, at which point they revealed that her song would be part of Zack Snyder’s “Justice League” cut.
In a conversation with director Zack Snyder, she explained what she loved about her demo and how much she wanted to keep that feel for the final recording. He suggested using strings in the composition, rather than the earlier sounds in the demo that Betts described as “seagull-like” and “haunting”.
Otherwise, Snyder and his team emphasized that they wanted the version that would be heard in the film to be as close to the demo as possible, while retaining the feel of the demo.
The song was recorded on January 7, 2021, at AIR Studios in London. Betts recorded her voice and piano at the same time before lunch and then did the strings, mixing them in just one day.
The song was one of the last things recorded for Zack Snyder’s “Justice League” besides Allison Crowe’s version of “Hallelujah”.
Soundtrack for Zack Snyder’s “Justice League”
The original soundtrack for Zack Snyder’s “Justice League” (2021) was composed by Dutch musician and producer Tom Holkenborg, aka Junkie XL.
In addition to his extensive discography outside the world of soundtracks, Holkenborg has previously participated with his music in series and films such as ‘White Lines’, ‘Terminator: Dark Fate’, ‘Tomb Raider’, ‘Deadpool’ or ‘The Dark Tower’, among others.
British singer/songwriter Rose Betts has released “Song to the Siren” as part of Zack Snyder’s “Justice League” (the film’s original soundtrack), available today from WaterTower Music.
The soundtrack features an all-new score to accompany Snyder’s vision for the film, created by GRAMMY-nominated multi-platinum producer, musician, composer and educator Tom Holkenborg, also known as Junkie XL (‘Mad Max: Fury Road’, ‘Deadpool’, the upcoming ‘Godzilla Vs. Kong’), along with 2 songs to open and close the soundtrack: “Song to the Siren” performed by Rose Betts and “Hallelujah” performed by Allison Crowe.
