The Song ‘General’ by Jay Chou – Yang Li’s goosebump moment

(text video)

“Hi! I’m Yang Li, and I come from China. My goosebump moment is listening to the song ‘General’ by Jay Chou. It’s a hip-hop song about Chinese chess, and I think it’s the coolest song in the world. First, it has a heavy rhythm and a strong beat. Every time when I listen to it, I can’t help to keep my body moving with it. And more importantly, it makes this traditional game, Chinese chess, come to life. This song combines so many traditional elements, like chess jargon and history stories. So when I listen to it, I think the history is really cool, and it’s really fun. You know what? There is one interesting part of this song. At the end of the song, there is a voice recording of some old people playing chess in the park. And I think this coolest thing is happening around me! So I suggest you give it a try!”

The King of Mandopop

‘General’ is a song by Jay Chou. It was released on his album ‘Exclamation Mark’ in 2001. The song is about a general who is fighting for his country and his love. The lyrics are written by Huang Junlang and the music is composed by Jay Chou himself.

Born on January 18, 1979, in Taipei, Taiwan, Jay Chou is known for his chart-topping albums like ‘Still Fantasy’ and ‘The Era’. Not only is he a talented musician, but he’s also one of the wealthiest stars in China. In fact, he dominated the Taiwanese music scene in both 2007 and 2008 as the bestselling artist.

Many believe that Chou’s connection with music began with his mother who was a secondary school music teacher. After clocking her son’s early musical interest, Chou received piano lessons from the age of four. He later received cello lessons and also developed a passion for music theory.

Pop music managed to find a spot in his heart and Chou began to compose his own songs, combining both Chinese and Western music styles. By inventively fusing pop, rock and R&B he was credited with popularizing zhongguofeng (meaning Chinese style).

Over 20 years, Chou, now aged 41, has sold more than 30 million albums, mounted several lucrative world tours and even crossed over to act in Hollywood movies – including his role as Kato in 2011’s The Green Hornet reboot and appeared alongside Daniel Radcliffe in Now You See Me 2 (2016). Chou also manages his own record and management company, JVR Music.

So it was no surprise when it was reported that he has a net worth of 1 billion yuan (US$143 million) as of 2020. His wealth mostly came from his music, but product endorsements and branding also helped.
