That song hit so close to home because I lost a best friend due to a medical issue, and also because one of my biggest fears is to lose my dad. The way that he’s expressing himself in the song creates these emotions in me or trigger these emotions and they can end up giving me goosebumps and making me connect with him a lot.”

“How Do I Say Goodbye” is a poignant song in which, as Dean Lewis explains, the vocalist mourns his dying father, which honestly is not a particular theme we come across often. But as presented in this case, the recipient, namely Dean’s dying father, was someone who was a constant presence throughout his life.
His father meant so much to him that the prospect of him passing away was something the singer couldn’t conceptualize. And such is the thesis sentiment of this song, that Dean’s emotions are such that he cannot even conceive of “how to say goodbye” to his father.
